How do you do your content marketing? I started doing medium posts, but the 7 posts I did in April only reached 10 reads total. Content-wise I am quite satisfied with the posts. For example, covering First Republic Bank a couple of days before their crash end of last week. This should have brought in more clicks. Is Medium dead? Should I move to Substack? Is written content dead? Should I move to YT?

nothing is dead but video does better these days. i highly recommend doing youtube if you’d find it as easy as writing. the algo will help you a lot. you should also be doing 10x more promotion than writing.

Does make sense. In that case I should go back to my promotion concept.

Ungated content of any kind is a long game. It can take months to get traction and get any extra ‘juice’ from the platforms based on SEO/tags, etc. Consistency helps, but your content creation and distribution calendar is only one piece of your marketing plan. You need several more elements in place for the content to get discovered, consumed, and for people to follow your CTAs. This should include a promotional calendar as well.

Depending on who you are trying to reach with your articles is step 1. Your Bank article screams substack. Step 2 what is your actual expectation? Marketing of any kind has to have a goal or expected measures. Even if a test. What formatting standards is your writing following? Any at all? There is a reason why blogs and articles generally have rules around how long and how its broken up. Did you submit your articles to the medium editors to be considered as a featured article?

Thank you James, these are really valuable pointers. I am comparing Medium 2017 to Medium 2023. In 2017, you could post an article on Medium and could quite easily get 40K views and editor features. Nowadays that seems to be much more difficult. Obviously, there is so much more content. Yet whenever I login to Medium it feels like I see the same 10 articles. Hence I was wondering if Medium has a content discovery problem or I have a content problem.

No Problem. Yes Medium has had to update its business model since 2017. The member only content is still reviewed. I have a couple of articles that were 'picked up' as an example and they are still available. If its about just attracting new views to your content, I dont think Medium is really a great place for that if not looking to Reddit or other platforms to "amplify" its effect. Its just how it is these days with a new platform entering the fray. I cantattest to the quality of your articles, but there are plenty of tools that can help edit them. Dare I say Chat GPT may even be able to reformat it for more digestible consumption in a blog format.
