They can work very well as long as its not the only thing you have lined up i your growth strategy. Its supporting cast to get things moving and in many cases early adopters/new product versioning. In my experience with AppSumo in particular, you have to be willing to accept the cost as part of your MDF (even if you arent even using MDF) AppSumo doesnt realy take anyone to be part of a featured package so find out the criteria and cost. Make sure the offer is sweet enough and ensure you have parsed out Appsumo deals from the rest of your users. They can be valuable for feedback for reviews etc.
