those are all great methods. What we do at McSmartyPants.com is bring the customer into the conversation to guide product decisions. First, we determine the pain and the need (how deep, frequent, etc and is there a good alternative already that people don't want to switch from). Then, we figure out which solution would be most likely purchased, and that is based around the big problem from the previous step along with the person or company's particular capabilities (lots of what you post here could be other good methods of measuring or testing solutions), and then we refine the solution by determining which features (etc) the customer actually cares the most about for those MVPs and early launches so that you get maximum traction. Well, at least that's what our accelerator program does. Our currently available software takes just that last step and runs some machine learning on your target audience's responses to a variety of questions about features, competitors, pricing, and more, so that you can iterate before building things.
