You write an article or a landing page on your competitor and drive a dozen backlinks. It still doesn't rank on google search. "The keyword difficulty was low; why is it still not ranking?" (more in threads)
Traditionally, content marketing teams write an extensive article about competitors or make a landing page & group everything in it. So an example in the project management space would be - An extensive article on Trello covering - what Trello is, use cases, features, pricing, reviews, alternatives & then pushing their own product (the brand is writing that blog). But guess what, if a user is looking for Trello pricing, he/she is not interested in other things like reviews & alternatives. So the intent in these articles is not satisfied. An article with just Trello pricing (& if google search is - Trello pricing) would outrank everything, including g2, Capterra landing pages. The intent is way more critical in google's eyes than your dr or traffic. Now, look at these 2 searches, manyrequests pricing & manyrequests alternatives. One of our brands, ClientVenue is outranking many established & reputable sites like g2, capterra. Now you may wonder why marketing teams club everything together when talking about competitors? One, the teams don’t see enough standalone articles to know its effectiveness. Quite frankly, I only see a few of our friends and us doing it on the internet. Secondly, clubbing everything together saves a lot of time & costs (remember, a great article costs at least 100 dollars)
