Hi everyone, I'm seeking clarification on the legality of purchasing datasets from Fiverr and reselling them (or giving it for free) on my own website. Specifically, I'm considering buying a dataset containing 6 million USA consumer email addresses. I would appreciate any insights or legal guidance regarding the potential copyright or privacy implications of reselling such a dataset. Thank you for your assistance. Best regards, Rene Tatua

you should never buy lists in general, too much shadiness

You should also never say never to legitimate strategies. There’s always an exception.

My guess is almost none of these users have given their consent to go on any list, least of all yours and with more privacy regulations coming into force in the U.S. and elsewhere you need to think about consent BEFORE communicating with them. You also better put in place an opt out tool because the vast majority will want out of your list 5 seconds after receiving your email. Thread carefully.

Yes, I agree. But, in my case, I want to contact digital agencies to offer my product. So, my idea is to collect email addresses from their respective websites. And after that, send personalized emails to them. I think that is totally doable. Right?
k
No. That's scraping and against most privacy regs. Ask yourself - did they give you permission to scrape their email and second, did they express any interest in your product or suggest a connection. Also I would never do business with anyone that scrapes my details from the website site.
d
It actually depends. Cold email is very much allowed in all countries. You just need to give them a way to opt out. Also, even though you would NEVER, doesn’t mean other people would never. He doesn’t necessarily need to ‘scrape’ with a third party tool which is what’s against most privacy policies. Collecting contact details to talk to another business about a partnership that could benefit them isn’t frowned upon. It’s called outbound.
k
Agreed on some of that but scraping is frowned upon. If there is a generic info@ or contact@ by all means use it and try and get to the right person.
d
Fair enough.
